阿科巴拉克是一种颗粒状物质,它由一个小螺丝内核(增加比重),和一个粘土外壳(膨润土和有机聚合物),有机聚合物是为了使外壳与内核紧密结合,膨润土是为了这个颗粒在水解后膨胀,形成一个均匀的、沾粘的、非穿透性的、并有极好弹性层。

它的目的是:把被污染的底泥与水体物理地分离开来,防止被污染的沉淀悬浮而浑浊,减少溶解性的污染物进入水体,并且加速覆盖后无氧环境的自然生物降解,如此技术的设计使用寿命为50年到100年,与某些污染物如脱氯作用的自然降解半衰期为30-60年相当。

与普通覆盖物相比,阿科巴拉克有较高的抵抗水流的侵蚀作用(高于5 ft/s),而沙子是1.5 to 3 ft/s; 阿科巴拉克有较低的穿透性(10-8-10-9 cm/s),而沙子是(10-1-10-4 cm/s),这样导致污染物要较长的时间来突破覆盖物,Aquablok只需要少于6英寸的厚度,而沙子至少需要1英尺的厚度;阿科巴拉克里面的膨润土可以作为微生物的营养基,因为他们的溶解氧和0.5%有机碳可以与底泥相比。

Aquablok is a kind of granular material with a gravel core and clay (bentonite and organic polymer) coat, in which organic polymer attaches a coating to the gravel core and bentonite is used to swell the granular material when hydrating to form a unified, cohesive, impermeable and elastic layer.

The purpose is to physically isolating contaminated sediments from the water column; stabilizing and preventing the contaminated sediments from resuspension; reducing dissolved contaminant flux into overlying water column ; and accelerating natural degradation processes in more anaerobic environments after cap placement;for example the designed life time of the capping is from 50 -100years that matchs with the half-life of natural degradation processes of some contaminants such as dechlorination (30-60 years) .

Compared to other materials, Aquablok has higher erosion resistance to water flow (up to 5 feet/second) as compared to sand (1.5 to 3 feet/second);lower permeability (10-8-10-9 cm/s) as compared to sand (10-1-10-4 cm/s) results in longer breakthrough times; they are effective at less than six inch thickness, whereas sand caps are usually at least one foot in thickness; and the bentonite can serve as substrate for invertebrate recolonization because the dissolved oxygen and organic carbon concentration (approximately 0.5%) are comparable to sediment.

When integrated with other products, AquaBlok? can be modified into some multi-function products. For example, optionally amending bentonite in AquaBlok with treatment materials like zero-valent iron (ZVI) or EHC-MTMto target at heavy metal and organic pollutants to form a comprehensive products (AquaBlok+DARAMEND or EHC) and changing the permeability to match with sediment so that the pore water can pass through the cap layer.AquaBlok? is modified as AquaBlok+TM that has coverage and treatment double functions.

A fundamental advantage of BARACLEAR is its ability to reliably deliver the active treatment directly to bottom of the waterway, the sediment/water interface where Phosphorous resides primarily at to make it more efficiently and effectively bind phosphorous. Alum additions are traditionally made in powder or liquid form and the treatments primarily address phosphorous in the water column, So it do little or nothing to address the primary source of phosphorus that resides on the bottom (sediment)
